Cheats, Tips and Tricks

Activating The Cheat Window

To open a cheat box press "Ctrl" + "shift" + "C" at the same time.
Mac Users: press "Command"+"Shift"+"C"

"rosebud" or "klapaucius"
Type "klapaucius" (or "rosebud", if you have the first patch or any of the expansion packs) Gives you 1000 Simoleons

Instant Millionaire
Type "klapaucius" (or "rosebud", if you have the first patch or any of the expansion packs) Type "!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;" repeatedly until the end of the line. erase the last "!", and replace with any character, except ";" or "!". (So it would look something like this: rosebud !;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;a ) Hit "enter". It will give you the error, "No Such Cheat", but it will increase your funds. Hold down "enter", until you think you have enough funds, or until your finger wears out. Before you know it, your Sim is an instant millionaire.

water_tool
While in Build Mode, type "water_tool". Used to make ponds, steams, moats, etc. Hot Date, has this function built in to the Build Mode menu.

Bringing in the Bills
Always keep an empty table near the front door. Use this table only for bill paying. When a Sim brings in the mail, he will place it on the first empty table he passes. This cuts down on the walking distance to and from the mail box. Two table works even better.

Using Columns to Build
Columns are a pleasant alternative to walls, but the game will only allow you to build so much floor above a column. To get around this, simply build a room/wall with four sides just inside the columns. Add floors, walls, windows or doors to the 2nd story. Then, go back down stairs, and delete the 1st story wall. You can make some really nice balconies using this trick.

move_objects on
This little trick is particularly helpful on Vacation Island, and downtown, but to use it there you will need a build mode enabler like the one at Paladin's Place. Bring up the cheat code box and type "move_objects on". Then click on the object you want to move or delete. This cheat can be used to for sending annoying neighbors home, moving pedistrians, and cars out of the way, and even getting really stupid sims unstuck from doors and stairways.

AUTONOMY [0 - 100]
Sets the independence level of your Sims. A Sim with an Autonomy of zero will do little if anything unless told by you. A Sim with an Autonomy of 100 will do pretty much what it wants.
The default AUTONOMY setting is 50.

BUBBLE_TWEAK [ 0 - -65]
Sets the hight of your Sims thought bubbles. The default is -65. I haven't gotten this to do much, though.

DRAW_ALL_FRAMES [ON/OFF]
Turns the floorable grid on or off in build mode when you add a second story.

DRAW_ROUTES [ON/OFF]
Draws colored dots on selected Sim's path. This is a good cheat to use if you are trying to figure out why a Sim is having trouble navigating a house you're building.

EDIT_GRASS [INCREMENT]
Turns on edit mode for grass tiles. The increment sets the value to apply to the grass on the ground tiles. To edit grass simply play the mouse over the grass like a paint program. Positive values will cause the grass to grow to that level of lushness, negative values will fade it to dirt. To turn grass edit off use an increment of zero.

Hot Date has added the "Edit Grass" functionality to the Build Mode dirt tool.

GENABLE [see below]
Genable tells The Sims rendering engine what to draw. While it does not really do anything useful in game play, it is fun to play with. Below is a list of the different GENABLE commands and what they do:

GENABLE DEFAULT - Sets everything back to default values
GENABLE STATUS - Displays the current GENABLE settings (duh!)
GENABLE TERRAIN [ON/OFF] - Turns on/off rendering of terrain objects
GENABLE FLOORS [ON/OFF] - Turns on/off rendering of floors
GENABLE WALLS [ON/OFF] - Turns on/off rendering of walls
GENABLE OBJECTS [ON/OFF] - Turns on/off rendering of objects
GENABLE PEOPLE [ON/OFF] - Turns on/off rendering of people (Sims)
GENABLE ALL [ON/OFF] - Turns on/off rendering everything

GRID [ON / OFF]
Turns on/off terrain grid drawing. (Wee!)

GROW_GRASS [1 - 150]
Grows grass across an entire lot to the lushness of the value set

HISTORY [FILENAME (optional)]
Writes out the family history of the current family. If file is not specified, the default is used.

INTERESTS
Brings up a display window with the selected Sims interests.

MAP_EDIT [ON/OFF]
Allows map editing. You click on a map square to change its color. Dark tiles become part of the lot that you can build on and light tiles become property of Sim City and you are not allowed to build on them. If you are careless you could cut off access to the mailbox and the exit teleporters

PREPARE_LOT
Checks for required objects on the current lot and deletes "come and seeme" objects. If you use that cheat on an active map all of your Sims will instantly stop what they were doing. Sleeping Sims will keep snoring, even though they are no longer sleeping. When used downtown, all the townies and NPCs are moved to the middle of the log.

ROUTE_BALLOONS [ON/OFF]
Turns on an off the Basic Tutorial.

ROTATE [0/1/2/3]
Rotates the field of view 90 degrees (the same as hitting the "<" and ">" keys).

SET_HOUR [1 - 24]
Change the time of day to the time entered in 24 hour "military" time - 01-12 =1:00 am - 12:00 noon, 13-24 = 1:00pm - 12:00 midnight. This has interesting effects on Sims Needs indicators.

NOTE: This cheat code has been removed in the 1.1 Patch for The Sims! as well as Living Large/Living it Up.

SIM_LOG [BEGIN/END]
This cheat creates a tab-delimited ASCII log file of the actions of each Sim in the current house (family and guests), what they did and how it affected them. The file will be named "simlog.txt" and be located in your The Sims directory. You can easily import the the file into any Windows or Mac spread sheet program and examine the information, for whatever usefulness you might find that data.

TILE_INFO [ON/OFF]
Brings up an information window displaying values for the tile currently under the mouse. While the information looks pretty interesting, it does not seem to have much in-game value..
